Betting Essentials - Fluctuations results Updated and Expanded

The significance of betting fluctuations can be better appreciated when a punters real-world experience is brought into the analysis. The following studies all used actual market percentages and not adjusted percentages.

To investigate the real-world implications, in Betting Essentials the Wizards WRat 100 pointer was used.

The following table in the book showed the impact of positive and negative fluctuations on WRat 100 runners, for both 3% and 5% changes.

In the 2023-2024 season which was the period covered in the original research, the Wizard rated 16,841 races, and the overall strike rate was 26%.

Waiting for a positive signal before betting, here firming by 3% from the 30 minute odds, saw the WRat100 strike rate improve to 38%.

A negative market signal, in the form of WRat100s odds easing by 3% at the 15 minute mark, flagged a lower potential strike rate.

Now looking at the figures for these WRat100 horses that firmed or eased by 3% or more in the period since Betting Essentials was released - from February 1 this year to June 30, a period of 5 months. In that time there were 6,391 races, and the overall win strike rate for these runners improved to 27.7%.

The following table shows that the positivity in the initial results has been confirmed, with even better strikes rates being recorded.

For this Daily Report article as well as looking at the Wizard Top Rater as originally published in my book, I also analysed the performance of the Wizard Second-Top Rated runner under the same conditions, but over a longer period, August-June, 2025-2026.

Over this extended period there were 12,815 races, and the Wrat 2 runner had an overall strike rate of 17.8%.

The results of this analysis clearly show the significance of market action and the value of taking it into account.
